4²-amino-biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid is a hydrocarbon that is used in peptide synthesis, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and molecular modeling. It has been shown to effectively catalyze the cross-coupling reaction of aryl halides with organometallic reagents. This process allows for the construction of carbon-carbon or carbon-heteroatom bonds. The regioselectivity of this reaction can be tuned by modifying the steric environment around the carboxylic acid group, which can be done by adding bulky substituents to the amino group at one end of the molecule. 4²-Amino-biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid is also used as an amide coupling partner in multigram syntheses of peptides and other biomolecules.
