Calcium-D-sorbitol (CD) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is structurally similar to ibuprofen. It is a prodrug, which means it is converted into its active form by an enzyme in the body called carboxylic acid reductase. CD has been shown to be effective in reducing the severity of pain and inflammation caused by autoimmune diseases such as arthritis. CD also has been shown to inhibit the production of azoxymethane, a chemical that causes colon cancer in mice. The mechanism of action for CD may be due to the inhibition of cyclooxygenases, which are enzymes involved in prostaglandin synthesis, or through interference with fatty acid metabolism.
