Description

(Z)-3-Hydroxy-3-oxo-1-phenylprop-1-en-2-olate is a colorimetric reagent that reacts with hydrazine to form an orange red color. It has been used in the detection of solvents and in the determination of the sensitivity of microorganisms to solvents. The hydrazone can be quantified by measuring its fluorescence or by using a high performance liquid chromatography technique. (Z)-3-Hydroxy-3-oxo-1-phenylprop-1-en-2-olate is soluble in water and its sodium salt, phenylpyruvic acid, is soluble in organic solvents such as chloroform, acetone, and alcohols. This dye is also soluble in pyruvic acid, which makes it possible to determine the concentration of this compound from a constant ratio.
