Product Information

Name:
Scandium carbonate
Synonyms:
  • Carbonic acid, scandium(3+) salt (3:2)
  • Scandium (III) carbonate hydrate
Description:

Scandium carbonate is a metal salt of hydrochloric acid that has a particle size of about 100 microns. Scandium carbonate is used in the production of scandium metal and as a catalyst for chemical reactions. It also has applications in the production of zirconium oxide, which is used in the manufacture of ceramics, nuclear reactors, and semiconductors. Scandium carbonate is an impure product with an average particle diameter of about 100 microns. The chemical composition of scandium carbonate varies depending on the method used to make the product. Scandium carbonate can contain up to 0.5% iron or titanium impurities. Scandium carbonate reacts with sodium carbonate to produce scandia metal, which is then heated to high temperatures to remove any remaining impurities such as chlorine and sulfur compounds. The thermal expansion coefficient for scandia metal is 2/3 that of aluminum.
