4-Acetamidopiperidine is an amide that is used as an anesthetic. It is a potent compound that binds to the acetylcholine receptor, leading to a decrease in the activity of this receptor. 4-Acetamidopiperidine has been shown to be a potent inhibitor for the amide binding site on the acetylcholine receptor, with less than 1% of its potency lost when bound to other receptors. This property makes it selective for the amide binding site and allows it to be used in assays to measure the affinity of substances for this binding site. The drug also binds with high affinity (Ki = 0.4 nM) to the trifluoroacetylcholine receptor, which may be responsible for its neurotoxic effects. 4-Acetamidopiperidine has no effect on muscarinic receptors or nicotinic receptors and has only low affinity for serotonin receptors.
