SU 4312 is a synthetic molecule that binds to the alpha subunit of the human epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) with high affinity. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in cell culture. SU 4312 may be effective in treating patients with hematopoietic disorders, such as leukemia, who have developed resistance to erythropoietin and other agents. The compound is also being investigated as a potential treatment for other cancers, such as prostate, colon, breast, and pancreatic cancers. SU 4312 inhibits the activity of tyrosine kinase enzymes that are responsible for transmitting signals from receptors on the surface of cells to control cell proliferation and differentiation. This inhibition results in the death of tumor cells by inhibiting their proliferation and inducing apoptosis.
