2-Hydroxyphenyl benzenecarboxylate is a reactive oxygen species that is generated by the peroxide-hydroxide ion reaction. It has been shown to cause oxidative carbonylation of proteins and DNA in vitro. The hydroxyl group of 2-hydroxyphenyl benzenecarboxylate reacts with the amino groups in proteins, causing protein crosslinking and oxidative damage to DNA. 2-Hydroxyphenyl benzenecarboxylate has been shown to be fluorescent, which may be due to its ability to oxidize tetrahydrofuran or other aromatic compounds.
