Description

2-Bromopyridine is a white solid that is soluble in water. It can be synthesized by the reaction of bromine and pyridine, or by the reaction of ammonia and 2-bromopyridine. 2-Bromopyridine has a molecular weight of 168.2 g/mol, which corresponds to a molecular formula of C5H5BrN. This substance can also be obtained from the hydrolysis of 2-chloropyridine with hydrochloric acid in an aqueous solution. The reaction is exothermic and proceeds at room temperature. The product is precipitated as an ammonium salt, but it can also react with hydrochloric acid to form hydrogen bromide gas and water vapor. In this process, the hydroxyl group on the ring reacts with hydrogen chloride gas to form hydrochloric acid and water vapor.
