Barium selenate is a chemical substance that has been used to study the effects of selenium on animals. Treatment with this compound has been shown to increase the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) in the mitochondria and to decrease lipid peroxidation in rats. This compound has also been shown to be effective against subclinical mastitis in cows but not goats. Selenium can be found naturally in proteins, such as creatine kinase, or it can be chemically synthesized. Selenium is an essential nutrient for human beings and animals, as well as being an important component of many enzymes.
