Bromohydroquinone is a chemical compound that contains a hydroxyl group and a bromine atom. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of phenol and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. Bromohydroquinone has been used as a cross-linking agent for proteins, nucleic acids, and other biological molecules. Bromohydroquinone can be synthesized by reacting diazonium salt with bromoethane and adding hydrobromic acid. Bromohydroquinone is also an inhibitor of mitochondrial respiration and blocks adenine nucleotide translocation in mitochondria. This inhibits ATP production, leading to cell death. Bromohydroquinone has been shown to cause proximal tubular necrosis in rats due to its ability to inhibit urea nitrogen metabolism by competitively binding to the enzyme carbamoyl phosphate synthetase I, which converts ammonia into urea nitrogen.
