3-Bromopropionyl chloride is a benzimidazole derivative that is structurally related to the antimalarial drug halofantrine. 3-Bromopropionyl chloride has been shown to inhibit growth in mammalian cells by binding to the hematopoietic growth factor erythropoietin (EPO) and preventing its interaction with the EPO receptor. The compound also inhibits protein synthesis in P. aeruginosa, an important pathogen of cystic fibrosis patients, by interfering with the function of matrix metalloproteinases. 3-Bromopropionyl chloride binds to amines and hydrochloric acid, which may be due to hydrogen bonding interactions. Structural studies have revealed that 3-bromopropionyl chloride has a planar molecular geometry and is a weak base, which explains its high reactivity.
