Butyl chloroformate is a solid phase microextraction (SPME) stationary phase component. It has been used in metabolic studies as a reagent for the preparation of amines and amides. The chloroformate group reacts with sodium carbonate to form butyl carbonate, which can then be converted to the corresponding acid chloride. Butyl chloroformate is also used in analytical methods involving the determination of amines and amides. This compound has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties that may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.br>br>
Butyl chloroformate is toxic to rat liver microsomes and inhibits the metabolism of some drugs, such as phenytoin, carbamazepine, and phenobarbital.
