1,3-Bis(4-nitrophenyl)urea is a contraceptive that acts by inhibiting the activity of lipoprotein lipase. This results in decreased uptake and storage of triglycerides and cholesterol in adipose tissue. It also inhibits the production of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) and high-density lipoproteins (HDLs). 1,3-Bis(4-nitrophenyl)urea has been shown to inhibit nicarbazin-induced hepatic gluconeogenesis in rats, as well as to increase insulin sensitivity. 1,3-Bis(4-nitrophenyl)urea is currently being studied for its potential use in treating pharmacological treatment for type 2 diabetes.
