1-Tert-Butyl-6-Fluoro-4-Oxo-7-Piperazin-1-Yl-1,8-Naphthyridine 3 Carboxylic Acid (NPCA) is a fluoroquinolone that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. NPCA binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. It has been shown to be effective against Mycobacterium avium complex, but not against acid fast bacteria such as M. tuberculosis or M. avium. NPCA has also shown antimicrobial activity in human monocytes and acidic tissues, such as the stomach, but not in alkaline tissues such as the bladder.
