Benfluorex is a drug that inhibits the enzyme activities of sodium citrate, which is involved in metabolic disorders and infectious diseases. It also prevents the release of lysosomal enzymes from cells and thus cell lysis. This drug is used for the treatment of bowel disease, such as Crohn's disease, and for insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Benfluorex has been shown to inhibit primary pulmonary hypertension in rats. It has also been found to have anti-cancer properties by inhibiting tumor growth in animal models.
