5-Bromo-2-fluoropyridine-3-carbaldehyde is an herbicide that inhibits photosynthetic activity in plants. It binds to the active site of enzymes and prevents the formation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). 5-Bromo-2-fluoropyridine-3-carbaldehyde has been shown to be toxic to liver cells, but has no effect on mammalian cells. The herbicide also inhibits microbial metabolism, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the enzyme cytochrome P450. This chemical can react with phosphorus pentoxide in a matrix effect with other chemicals. It is also used as a raw material for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, including diazepam and erythromycin.
