4-bromo-6-(trifluoromethyl)pyrimidine is a reactive, carboxylic acid. It has the formula bromopyrimidine. This compound is used in organic synthesis as an electrophilic brominating agent and as a precursor to other compounds. The mechanism of 4-bromo-6-(trifluoromethyl)pyrimidine was first proposed by G. B. Smith in 1960, who proposed that it react with butyllithium to form 3-chloropropane and a chloromethyl pyridinium cation. The product then reacts with chloride ions to give 2,4,6-trichloropyrimidine and lithium chloride. This reaction can be reversed by heating the product to give 4-chloro-6-(trifluoromethyl)pyrimidine and lithium chloride. The compound is stable and does not react with oxygen or water at
