Barium trifluoromethanesulfonate is a salt that is used in synthetic chemistry. It is prepared by the reaction of barium carbonate and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid in metathesis reactions. Barium trifluoromethanesulfonate is an excellent catalyst for the asymmetric synthesis of coumarin derivatives. The activated carboxylic acid reacts with amines to form esters, which are then acylated to give acylated amines. The x-ray diffraction data has been collected at room temperature on a sample of barium trifluoromethanesulfonate, and FTIR spectroscopic studies were carried out in order to determine the carbonyl group and high salt content.
