Bz-Ala-Ala-D-Trp-Phe-D-Pro-Pro-Nle (BAAPPDNP) is a cytosolic Ca2+ antagonist. It inhibits the release of neurotransmitters and neurally induced contractions in rat ileum. BAAPPDNP has been shown to inhibit colonic inflammation by suppressing the production of proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL-6 and TNFα. This compound also inhibits the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in an in vitro study. BAAPPDNP is a saponin that binds to phospholipids on the cell membrane and blocks calcium channels, which leads to a decrease in intracellular calcium levels.
