4-Bromo-1,1,2-trifluoro-1-butene (4BT) is a modification of butene. It is synthesized by the addition of hydrogen peroxide to an ethylene oxide solution containing ethanol and 1,2-dichloroethane. 4BT is a nucleophilic compound that reacts with various electrophiles. The modifications are rationalized by kinetic data obtained from the kinetics of copolymerization of 4BT with ethylene oxide and its hydrogenation with hydrogen over palladium on charcoal. The strain energy parameters for 4BT were calculated using ethylene as the reference system and statistical analysis of the copolymerization data. Copolymers were synthesized with different ratios of 4BT to ethylene and their properties were determined using x-ray crystallography.
