Biotinyl-Val-Ala-DL-Asp-fluoromethylketone is a protease inhibitor that binds to the active site of caspases and prevents them from cleaving substrates. It stabilizes the dimer interface of caspases and prevents their activation by IL-1β. This drug also inhibits the activation of caspases 1, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11. Biotinyl-Val-Ala-DL-Asp-fluoromethylketone has been shown to inhibit apoptosis in mammalian cells in vitro and in vivo. In addition, it has been shown to be effective against recombinant proteins that are involved in cell signaling pathways (e.g., EGFR).
