3-Benzyl-2,6-diphenyl-2H-thiopyran-5-carbaldehyde is a heterocyclic compound that belongs to the naphthalene family. It is synthesized by condensation of 3,4-benzylenedioxyphenol with 2,6-diphenylthiophene in the presence of phosphorus pentoxide and sulfide. The sulfide anion can be replaced by other anions such as chloride or bromide. The reaction is carried out under refluxing conditions at 120 °C for 18 hours with stirring. The product is purified by column chromatography on silica gel and crystallizes from ethanol/ether mixture.
