1-Bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-ylethanamine is an amine that is a colorless liquid with a sweet, fruity odor. It is an isomer of 1-bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane and can be synthesized by the reaction of phthalic anhydride and triethylamine in chloroform. This compound has been shown to be hydrogen peroxide (HOOOH) decomposition catalyst and can be used to generate HOOOH gas from hydrogen peroxide and chloride ion in water solution at room temperature, although it does not catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide when exposed to light. 1-Bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-ylethanamine also has spectroscopic properties that make it useful as a chemical marker for NMR spectroscopy techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR).
