Product Information

Name:
2-(Bromomethyl)-2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane
Synonyms:
  • 1,3-Dioxolane, 2-(bromomethyl)-2-methyl-
  • 2-(Bromomethyl)-2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane
Description:

2-Bromomethyl-2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane is a vinyl ether that is used as a precursor in polymer synthesis. This compound can be synthesized by the ring opening of 2-(bromomethyl)-2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane with potassium hydroxide or sodium methoxide. 2-Bromomethyl-2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane can also be synthesized by the reaction of magnesium metal with bromoethanol and methylmagnesium chloride. The Grignard Reagent may be used to generate this compound. The Grignard reagent is made by adding bromoethanol to magnesium metal followed by methylmagnesium chloride. The Grignard reagent reacts with aliphatic compounds to produce enol ethers, which can then react with other compounds to form dioxolanes.
