N-Benzyl-DL-alanine is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that has been shown to have protective effects against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. It also has the ability to inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-8 and TNF-α. N-Benzyl-DL-alanine may be a potential therapy for inflammatory bowel disease. This compound inhibits the activity of proinflammatory enzymes, such as cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, which are involved in the formation of prostaglandins and leukotrienes respectively. NBDLA also blocks the synthesis of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, an important precursor for formation of proinflammatory mediators. In addition, NBDLA reduces inflammation by inhibiting the production of reactive oxygen species by tubule cells in kidney tissue.
