1-Butyl-1H-indole-2,3-dione is a fluorescent probe that is used to study the patterning of cells. It is active in organic solvents and shows potent inhibitory activity against a wide variety of microorganisms. 1-Butyl-1H-indole-2,3-dione has been shown to be cytotoxic to carcinoma cells and marine microorganisms. The fluorescence properties of this compound are due to its ability to form an emulsion with water and quaternary ammonium compounds. It also has a synergistic interaction with cationic surfactants.
