(2E)-3-(2-Bromophenyl)acrylic acid is a drug that can be used to treat Alzheimer's disease. It inhibits the production of β-amyloid protein, which is thought to be the cause of the disease. This drug also inhibits the synthesis of proteins that are important for cell division, leading to cell death. The synthetic process for this drug starts with 2-bromobenzaldehyde and molybdenum oxide in an anhydrous acetonitrile solution. The reaction between these two compounds produces (2E)-3-(2-bromophenyl)acrylic acid, which is then purified by recrystallization from water or ether.
