1-Benzylcyclopropyl)amine hydrochloride is a ketone that inhibits mitochondrial monoamine oxidase. It is used as an antidepressant and anxiolytic drug. One of the major mechanisms of action for this drug is through inhibition of monoamine oxidase, which inactivates neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and serotonin. 1-Benzylcyclopropyl)amine hydrochloride has been shown to inactivate both the A and B isozymes of monoamine oxidase, but not the C isozyme. It also inhibits phenethylamine metabolism by inhibiting the activity of catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT). The mechanism behind its antidepressant effects may be due to its ability to increase levels of dopamine in the brain. This drug also has time-dependent effects on cysteine residues, with maximal inhibition occurring within 3 hours following administration. The molecule binds to a cysteine residue on the active site of benzyl alcohol
