1,1-Bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethylene (PCBEE) is a synthetic chemical that is used for the treatment of wastewater. It is an effective inhibitor of the growth of Aerogenes and Aerobacter aerogenes bacteria. PCBEE has been shown to inhibit the production of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). The pharmacokinetics and metabolism of this drug have been studied in healthy male subjects. A pharmacokinetic study showed that PCBEE plasma concentrations are significantly lower than those required for bacteriostatic activity. This may be due to its high affinity for binding proteins, such as deoxycytidine kinase, which prevents its distribution throughout the body.
