It interacts with membranes by protonation of the nitrogen atoms and forms complexes with ethylene oxide, which are high molecular weight. The compound is composed of two isomers, one of which has an ethylene group and the other has a methyl group in place of the ethylene group. The compound also has ligand properties, binding to metals such as iron or copper. 1-Benzyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)methanol hydrochloride also interacts with oxygen atoms on the imidazole rings, forming hydroxymethyl groups.
