5-Benzyl-2-furoic acid is a yellow crystalline solid that is soluble in ether, benzene, and chloroform. It can be prepared by the reaction of 5-benzyl furoic acid with sodium hydroxide solution in methanol. The compound is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. 5-Benzyl-2-furoic acid can be extracted from the reaction mixture using sodium carbonate solution and calcium chloride. The solvent is then removed by distillation under reduced pressure to yield 5-benzyl 2-furoic acid as a residue.
