8-(Benzyloxy)-2-methylquinoline (8BQ) is a chromophore that is used in the study of protein structure. 8BQ has been shown to be an efficient quencher of uv absorption and alkylation. It has also been shown to have antibiotic activity, inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, bacteria that cause food poisoning. 8BQ is synthesized by reacting benzyl alcohol with 2-methylquinoline in the presence of sodium bicarbonate, followed by amination with ammonium chloride and copper sulfate.
