5-(Bromomethyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole is a heterocyclic compound that contains the benzothiadiazole ring. It is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of about 111°C. This compound has been shown to be hydrolyzed by acids, alkalis and potassium cyanide. 5-(Bromomethyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole also reacts with malonic acid to form 5-bromo-2-(methylthio)benzoic acid. Nitration of this compound results in 5-nitro-2,1,3-benzothiadiazoles. Esterification of the nitrated benzothiadiazole leads to the formation of N'-(5-bromo-2,1,3-benzothiadiazol-5 ylmethyl)malonate esters.
