N-Benzyl-2-nitroaniline is a quinoline derivative that has been used as an amine. It has shown to be effective in the treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2 and also possesses anti-inflammatory properties. The synthesis of this drug is based on the reaction of nitrobenzene with different amines and aluminum chloride. This reaction is followed by nitration of the resulting benzylated amides, which leads to the formation of N-benzyl-2-nitroaniline. The mechanism for this process is intramolecular hydrogen transfer from an amino group in one molecule to an electron deficient carbon atom in another molecule, forming a new bond between the two molecules. In this process, there are no reactive intermediates, such as free radicals or peroxides and it does not produce any hazardous waste products.
