1,4-Bis(chloromethyl)-2-nitrobenzene is a polymerizable monomer that reacts with monomers such as vinylene and blocky to form polymers of various shapes and sizes. This compound is soluble in water. 1,4-Bis(chloromethyl)-2-nitrobenzene can be used to make polyelectrolyte materials that are stable at high pH levels. It has also been shown to be able to copolymerize with other monomers, such as vinylene and blocky. The 13C NMR spectrum shows signals for the chloromethyl group, which can be identified by the two peaks at 29.0 ppm and 33.5 ppm. Spectroscopic analysis of the polymerization products revealed a broad signal centered near 1,600 cm-1 for the sulfonium group and an absorption band near 2,000 cm-1 for the vinylene group. The polymerization
