2-Bromo-6-nitroaniline (2bNA) is a pump inhibitor that blocks the active transport of organic cations across the blood-brain barrier. It has been shown to be toxic to brain cells and can cause seizures. 2bNA has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to transition metal ions, such as copper and iron. This prevents bacterial uptake of iron, which is required for bacterial growth. 2bNA also inhibits macrolides by binding to their active site and preventing them from acting on bacterial ribosomes. There are limited data on the use of 2bNA in humans due to its toxicity at high doses; however, it has been used successfully in animal studies at lower doses. The effective dose appears to be around 0.1 mg/kg body weight with a reaction time of 45 minutes.
