4-Bromothiophenol is a reactive brominating agent that can be used to synthesize acetate extract. It reacts with the amino acid glutamate in the presence of pyruvate and yields a covalent adduct. This reaction product can be quantified by analytical methods such as preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (prep HPLC). The conversion of acetate extract to 4-bromothiophenol is dependent on the concentration of chloride ions, which are required for the formation of an active site. The anticancer activity of 4-bromothiophenol has been studied in rats, where it was found to inhibit glutamate pyruvate transaminase and urea nitrogen levels. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy showed that this agent has functional groups that include aryl and alkyl moieties.
