2,2'-Bipyridine-6-carbonitrile is a chelating agent for the preparation of chromogenic and chromogenic-reactive reagents. It is used in analytical chemistry to detect the presence of triazines in water. This compound reacts with the triazine to form an orange product that can be detected spectrophotometrically at 510 nm. 2,2'-Bipyridine-6-carbonitrile has been shown to react with various other organic compounds such as phenols, amines, and quinones.
