4-Bromopiperidine hydrobromide (4BPIH) is a compound that has been used in the past as an intermediate for the synthesis of other pharmaceuticals. 4BPIH has been shown to undergo fragmentation by ionizing radiation. The mechanism of this fragmentation is not entirely understood, but it appears that electrons are either added or removed from the molecule in order to form cations and anions. It has also been shown to be able to produce fragments such as acetone and methanol when heated with dioxane or ethanol. This reaction is influenced by the acidity of the solvent, which may be due to a solvolysis mechanism. 4-Bromopiperidine hydrobromide can also fragment synchronously under certain conditions, producing two different products at once, one via electron transfer and one via radical initiation. The fragmentation pathway is still being studied and there are many unanswered questions about how these reactions occur.
