Benzo[1,2-b:6,5-b']dithiophene-4,5-dione is a nitrate that has been shown to be an electrochemically active molecule. It can be synthesized by the reaction of dibutylamine with ammonium and thiophene in the presence of nitric acid. This compound has also been used as an analogue for other thiophene derivatives. Benzo[1,2-b:6,5-b']dithiophene-4,5-dione has been shown to undergo cyclic voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry in the presence of mercaptoacetate. The optical spectrum of this compound exhibits a strong absorption band at about 590 nm. In addition, it is also known for its aliphatic properties and can be prepared from ammonium nitrate by treatment with thiophosgene or chloramine T.
