Product Information
- Carbamic acid, (methylsulfonyl)-, 1,1-dimethylethyl ester
- Tert-Butyl (Methylsulfonyl)Carbamate
Tert-Butyl methylsulfonylcarbamate (TBMS) is a sulfamate that is structurally similar to the amino acid methionine. TBMS has been shown to be an inhibitor of protein synthesis in bacteria, and it has been used as an antibiotic for tuberculosis. TBMS inhibits the biosynthesis of mycobacterial siderophores, which are iron-chelating agents produced by mycobacteria to scavenge iron from their environment. It also binds to the active site on the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase, which is involved in the biosynthesis of pteridine, a precursor for folates. The tert-butyl group on TBMS can form hydrogen bonds with other molecules such as proteins or DNA bases. This tert-butyl group may also inhibit reuptake of neurotransmitters in humans.
