2-Bromo-4-methylbenzaldehyde is a chiral enantioselective diazotization agent that can be used to synthesize a variety of diazonium salts. The synthesis of these salts leads to the production of inhibitors of HMG-CoA reductase, which are used as statins. 2-Bromo-4-methylbenzaldehyde has been shown to inhibit HMG-CoA reductase by binding to the catalytic site and blocking access to the substrate. This inhibition leads to lower levels of cholesterol in the body, which can decrease the risk for heart disease.
