2-Bromo-1-phenylethanol is a bromohydrin that undergoes hydrolysis to form a phenylhydroxylamine. It can be used as a chemical intermediate in the production of pyridinium salts, nitrite ions, and phosphorus pentoxide. 2-Bromo-1-phenylethanol is also used as an intermediate for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds such as styrene and borohydride reduction. The bacterial strain Salmonella typhimurium was found to be resistant to 2-bromo-1-phenylethanol. This compound reacts with hydrogen ions to give chloride, which is formed by the elimination of water. Hydrolysis of 2-bromo-1-phenylethanol occurs when an asymmetric synthesis is performed using homologues.
