2-Bromo-5-hydroxymethylthiazole is an industrial chemical that is used for the preparation of potassium carbonate, a precursor to other potassium salts. This compound is prepared by sequentially reacting tetrabutylammonium bromide with potassium carbonate and carbon dioxide in an organic solvent. The product can be purified using recrystallization or by reacting it with phosphorus pentachloride followed by sodium borohydride.
2-Bromo-5-hydroxymethylthiazole is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of 130°C.
