tert-Butyl 3-cyanopyrrolidine-1-carboxylate is an industrial chemical with a wide range of applications. It is used in the production of formaldehyde and acrylonitrile, as a solvent for resins, and as a raw material for the manufacture of hydrochloric acid. The synthesis of tert-butyl 3-cyanopyrrolidine-1-carboxylate can be achieved by refluxing glycine with methylbenzene and aluminum chloride in hydrochloric acid solution. This process produces large amounts of paraformaldehyde and acrylonitrile as byproducts. The reaction is carried out on an industrial scale at high yield.
