5-Bromofuran-2-carboxylic acid is an organic compound that is used in the synthesis of the drug lapatinib. This molecule has been shown to have antimicrobial properties, and it has been suggested as a possible treatment for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The antimicrobial activity of 5-Bromofuran-2-carboxylic acid is due to its ability to inhibit methionine aminopeptidase, an enzyme involved in protein synthesis. Furfural, which is present in many food products, can also be used as a carbon source to produce this compound industrially.
