5-Bromo-2-hydroxynicotinic acid is an antibacterial agent with a broad spectrum of activity. It binds to the active site of the bacterial enzyme dihydropteroate synthase, which is essential for folate synthesis and DNA replication. 5-Bromo-2-hydroxynicotinic acid has been shown to be toxic to cardiac tissue and has a low bioavailability. This drug also blocks the action of dehydrogenases, which are enzymes involved in intermediary metabolism. The lack of toxicity against mammalian cells may be due to its inability to penetrate mammalian cell membranes. 5-Bromo-2-hydroxynicotinic acid has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics such as penicillin and tetracycline.
