7-Bromo-4-chloroquinoline-3-carbonitrile (7BCQ) is a drug that has been shown to have potent cytotoxic activity against colon tumor cells. 7BCQ is an alkylating agent that inhibits the enzymatic activity of DNA topoisomerase II and protein tyrosine kinases. The methoxy group in 7BCQ binds to the DNA backbone, which prevents the formation of new strands of DNA. This drug also induces apoptosis by binding to cellular nucleophiles, such as ethenyl and ethynyl groups. Optimization of this molecule has led to the discovery of a n-oxide form that exhibits greater potency than other forms.
