Scutia is a genus of plants in the family Menispermaceae. The alkaloids from this plant are synthesized by enzymatic oxidation of benzoquinones, which are found in their roots and leaves. Scutianine is a type of alkaloid that is derived from scutia. It has been shown to have cytotoxic effects in various cancer cell lines, as well as anti-inflammatory properties. Scutianine can also be used to make 2-(benzo[d]oxazol-2-yl)-2-methylpropanenitrile (BOP), an organic compound with fragmentation properties. BOP has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on cancer cells and has a spectrum that closely matches that of scutianine, but it does not have any anti-inflammatory activity.
