It has been shown to be a good alternative for benzotriazole, which is a high cost and toxic material. 4BMD is a quinoid that can be used as an additive or backbones in organic devices. 4BMD does not have any optical activity and can be easily synthesized from commercially available materials. The compound has been optimized for use in solar cells and other devices by changing the substituents on the bithienyl rings to optimize the electronic properties of the molecule.
